Citizens of Ukraine who live in Poland can get married in Poland. The competent authority to perform weddings in Poland is the Head of the Registry Office. It is best to report to the office closest to your current place of residence, but this is not mandatory. The bride and groom may choose any office throughout Poland.

The bride and groom must report to the Head of the Registry Office with valid identity documents (e.g., ID card, passport, residency card) and pay the stamp duty (PLN 84.00). On the same day, a wedding date reservation is made. Usually, Civil Registry Offices recommend that these first formalities be done no earlier than 6 months before the planned date of marriage.

In addition to identity documents, it is necessary for Ukrainian citizens to present birth certificates at the Civil Registry Office, and in the case of divorcees – documents confirming marriage and divorce decrees issued by Ukrainian authorities. The documents must be presented in the original and must first be translated by a sworn translator. The documents are returnable.

In addition, in the case of Ukrainian citizens, you must submit an official document issued by the Ukrainian authorities indicating his personal data and the personal data of his fiancée/fiancé and stating that, in accordance with domestic law, he may marry the person indicated in the certificate.

The Ukrainian authority competent to issue such a document is the Department of State Registration of Civil Status Acts (original name of the authority in Ukrainian: Відділ державної реєстрації актів цивільного стану). At the same time, when trying to register with this Department through the Ukrainian consulate in Poland, the consulate’s official website says: “Currently there are no free slots. Try to register later” (in Ukrainian: Наразі вільні слоти відсутні. Спробуйте зареєструватися пізніше).

Obtaining a marriage license due to the current situation in Ukraine faces insurmountable obstacles, as it would require the bride and groom to travel in person to a country at war.

For this reason, the only substitute document is a final decision of a Polish court exempting a Ukrainian citizen from the obligation to submit to the head of the Registry Office a document stating the possibility of marriage in accordance with the law of the country of origin. Failure of Ukrainian citizens to obtain a marriage license issued by a Polish court makes it impossible to get married in Poland.

SOS Legal law firm successfully assists citizens of Ukraine in obtaining a marriage license in Poland.  Depending on the jurisdiction of the court, the court procedure takes about 3 months. We help Ukrainian citizens to get married in Poland throughout the country.
